Thought Re-Training
We are not taught how to think – it’s a pity. The thoughts in your head can
make you pretty relaxed about life or downright miserable. Those thoughts are
not ‘the reality’ but rather what you are putting in your head. You might be
right, or very, very wrong.
Every thought has a physical reaction on your body. Your
mind and body are completed connected. The thoughts in your head can make you
physically ill! They can start the ‘flight or flight’ panic mode. They can
make you depressed. They can make you dream more at night. They can make you
exhausted.
We’ve seen extreme sports, but I’ve also encountered
clients going in for extreme thinking - “what if this happens…. and then
that….if only I could have this….. or he/she would do that….I’ll be happy
when…..what if….what if.”
These people often don’t enjoy the present, they live in
the future or rake up the past. They are never in the present moment – but
that’s where we are – always.
With this in mind, 4Change believes it’s invaluable to
teach some clients thinking skills so that they can control the thoughts in
their head, and I have worked very successfully with many clients on this over the
past six years. It’s a simple process and there can be a moment of
enlightenment when someone realizes that they just don’t need to carry around
all that junk – and that they can challenge some of their imaginary fears.
It’s particularly rewarding to work with young people and
give them some simple tips that can literally change their life.
Similarly, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is being
used more and more in the NHS due to the belief that our thoughts play such an
important part in our lives.
Read Richard Carlson’s ‘Stop Thinking Start Living’ – it’s
short, simple and excellent.
As Emerson said: ‘A man is what he thinks all day long.’
